If you’re looking for a cozy, seasonal recipe this fall you must try this strudel with SweeTango apples! It’s a favourite in my family because it’s easier and faster than making apple pie, but just as delicious. Get the recipe.
All apples are not created equal. I love apples but when faced with dozens of varieties at my local grocery store this harvest season, how do I know which one to choose?
I was introduced to SweeTango apples this season and I believe they are the perfect fall apple! The first time I tried a fresh SweeTango apple I didn’t realize I would be in for such a yummy experience. That first crisp, snappy bite instantly touched my taste buds and filled my mouth with a standout juicy flavour. No disappointment there – I knew then and there that this apple was no ordinary apple! SweeTango are described as super crisp with a juicy sweet-tangy flavour, a lively touch of citrus, honey and spice which makes them so extraordinary and enjoyable.
If you’re looking for that perfect unique and distinctly flavourful apple this fall, then you must try SweeTango!
Are SweeTango Apples good for baking?
SweeTango apples make the ideal snack, but since I enjoy baking I also tested them out as a baking apple. I made an Apple Strudel featuring sliced apples, golden raisins, brown sugar and cinnamon stuffed in layers of buttery phyllo pastry that bakes to a flaky golden-crisp. As soon as I inhaled the aroma of apples and cinnamon baking, I knew I achieved true perfection with this classic European dessert. This strudel has just the right balance of sweet-tangy apple flavour and retains some of the apple’s distinct crunchiness!
How SweeTango Apples Were Created and Why all the Hype?
Expert breeders struck gold with the marriage of a Honeycrisp and Zestar! apple resulting in this unique red with hints of yellow blush and freckled hybrid breed of apple. SweeTango apples were finally introduced nationwide in 2009. They were instantly loved by many and even have their own fan club #YearOfTheFan. Now that I’ve discovered these apples I’m definitely on board with this fan club!
Fun fact: the bite of the SweeTango apple holds the Guinness World Record for Loudest Crunch of an Apple. It clocked in at a remarkable 79.1 decibels, which compares to kitchen blenders, vacuum cleaners, or alarm clocks!
Where to buy SweeTango apples in Canada?
SweeTango apples are grown for the Canadian market in Nova Scotia and Quebec. This superior variety of apple is so exceptional that only select apple growers are permitted to produce them. They are seasonal and available for a limited time in early fall until mid-November.
This is what makes them so special: they’re always fresh and you must enjoy them while they last. I can assure you I eat my share of them!
Don’t miss out on these premium crisp SweeTango apples! Get them now while they are widely available in Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes at your local Costco, Metro, Fortinos, Loblaws, Zehrs, Independent Grocers, Provigo, IGA, Atlantic Superstore, Dominion, Sobeys, Walmart, and Independent Grocers.

I made this, my first strudel ever, and had to use McIntosh apples only because we are headed away…..it was absolutely delicious!! I gave some away as it was a very generous size! And then when friends came for dessert tonight, they LOVED it and asked for the recipe!
